Claiming Tax Relief on Medical Expenses

With all the recent publicity about tax return deadlines there is hardly a person in the country who has not wondered how could they reduce their tax liabilities.

One method often overlooked by people is to make a claim for tax relief on certain unreimbursed medical expenses incurred.

What can be claimed for?
Most medical expenses, with the exception of routine dental and ophthalmic care qualify for relief and you can claim relief on medical expenses incurred by you on your own behalf, on behalf of a dependent or on behalf of a relative.

Qualifying expenditure (includes)

  • Doctors/Consultants fees
  • Treatments prescribed by a doctor/consultant
  • Maintenance in a hospital or approved nursing home
  • Costs of speech and language therapy (qualifying)
  • Transport by ambulance
  • Costs of educational psychological assessments (qualifying)
  • Specialised Dental Treatment
  • Routine Maternity Care
  • In-Vitro Fertilisation
  • Orthoptic treatment
  • Hearing aids
  • Orthopaedic bed/chair
  • Physiotherapy
  • Costs on products manufactured specifically for coeliacs
  • Drugs and medicines (excluding amounts refundable under Drugs Payment Scheme)

(This is not an exhaustive list)

The relief is reduced by any amounts reimbursed by BUPA, VHI, VIVAS or the HSE.  In addition, if you are claiming for one person the first €125 of expenses incurred in the year is disallowed.  If you claim for more than one person the first €250 is disallowed.

How to claim the relief
The tax relief can be claimed after the 31st of December of the year in which the expense is incurred and can be claimed using the PAYE Online Service on www.revenue.ie.  Alternatively, you can complete Forms MED1/MED2 which are available online, or from the Revenue Forms Section Locall 1890306706.
